Alex Ostrowski

Alex Ostrowski designed a large book of tear-out posters each with fun illustrations and type designed to help him remember something which he usually forgets from day-to-day such as 'anything i can imagine i can do', 'Leave early walk slow', and 'Dance is exercise'. Simple, personal and well executed. 

Book Autopsies

Brian Dettmer carves into books revealing the artwork inside, creating complex layered three-dimensional sculptures. He seals, then cuts into old dictionaries, textbooks, science and engineering books, art books, medical guides, history books, atlases, comic books, wallpaper sample books, and many others, exposing select images and text to create intricate three-dimensional derivative works that reveal new or alternative interpretations of the books. He never inserts or moves any of the books' contents however in more recent work, Dettmer has augmented his artistic process by folding, bending, or rolling one or more books before sealing and cutting them, and in some instances, sanding them. 

In an earlier post artist Jennifer Maestre turned pencils into exciting sculptures, Dettmer is another artist who turns normal everyday objects into exciting works of art!

Pop Up Book

'Welcome to the enchanted universe of the Neiman Marcus Pop Up Book. This limited-edition memento follows a young girl's journey through Neiman Marcus from past to present. Our signature butterfly and an over-the-top Christmas make appearances, as well as our world-renowned art collection.'

Beautifully crafted, where attention to detail is at its upmost. In the top image the womans dress is made out of several black and white photos, even the shadows are actually printed, not real. A truly stunning book.

The Book

For thirty six weeks a sketchbook was sent in random order between four artists- two in Brooklyn, two in Belfast. Every Wednesday one participant would receive the book, the following Monday it was sent out, giving each designer five days to complete a spread in response to the one that preceded it. A small portion of each entry extends onto the one that preceded it. Beyond this, there was no communication between the artists concerning the content of the book during its making. Book's first trip across the Atlantic was on 2 June, 2003. Its final trip was on 2 February, 2004. By the time it was completed, Book had travelled over six thousand miles. Book can be viewed at www.lookatbook.com. Such an inspiring idea, would be such a pleasure to own the original book! The same idea could perhaps be done on an even larger scale sending one book all around the world to different famous artists in different countries, or even on a smaller scale at The University of Leeds design school! 

Things I Have Learned In My Life so Far

This book began as a list Stefan made in his diary of things i have learned in my life so far, which include statements such as 'Complaining is silly. Either act or forget' and 'Trying to look good limits my life'. These sentences were then transformed into typographic works, from bill-boards in France to sign-toting inflatable monkeys on the streets of Scotland. 

Everything about the project - its energy, humor, ambition and ingenuity  - is typical of Sagmeister's work. "It's a sublime mixture of violent and subtle, gross and endearing, direct and pensive," said Paola Antonelli, senior curator of architecture and design at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. "Stefan is a razor-blade wielding, gracefully brutal, always surprising master of communication - the Johnny Depp of the design world."
