Jennifer Maestre is an artist best known for her unique sculptures. She derives most of her inspiration from the form and texture of the sea urchin. I find her work fascinating to look at, all the different shapes that you just want to go up to and touch, and they are all created with the common everyday object, a pencil.
To make the pencil sculptures she takes hundreds of pencils, cuts them into 1-inch sections, drills a hole in each section, sharpens them all then sews them all together. The technique she uses most is called peyote stitch. The sections of pencils present aspects of sharp and smooth for two very different textural and aesthetic experiences. You can see more of her work on her website and read about her inspirations and how it all started.
